• ABOUT US

    OUR TEAM
We are a group of cultural enthusiasts from the Czech Republic and Australia interested in fostering friendship, connection and innovation across different disciplines and cultures.

    WHAT WE DO
We are a not-for-profit organisation based in Sydney, dedicated to the advancement of arts and sciences and the creation of new interdisciplinary perspectives. Through exhibitions, performances, workshops and lectures, we provide opportunities for artists and scientists to showcase their work, collaborate on projects, and engage with diverse audiences.

    WHY WE DO IT
We aim to bring people together by encouraging artists and scientists from a broad variety of backgrounds to share their knowledge and experience in mixed media settings. We hope that by bridging cultural and disciplinary boundaries and by presenting information from a kaleidoscope of multicultural aspects, we can foster a greater appreciation and understanding of our mutual influences and of our common global intellectual and creative landscape.

    Alena Jirásek

    President / Secretary

Originally trained as a Speech Pathologist due to my interest in linguistics and the science of communication, I am an accredited translator from Czech to English and now love translating literature, as well as writing. Along the way I have also studied languages and have a smattering of Spanish, French, German and Portuguese.

I have worked extensively in multicultural environments in Australia, the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic, and dealt with a broad variety of client groups, from people with disabilities to government departments involved in the accession of the Czech Republic to the European Union. My proudest recent moments are research and translation for the award-winning feature documentary film The Art of Dissent released in 2020, and the first publication in English of the poems of Josef Čapek in 2022.

    Vice-President / Treasurer

Originally from Prague and now calling Australia home for the past 8 years. With a background deeply rooted in the world of tea and the tea industry, I've always been fascinated by the intersection of art and science within this realm. Having spent close to a decade outside my country, I've come to appreciate how my cultural heritage shapes my perspectives. This realisation led me to miss my homeland, prompting me to connect with fellow Czech and Slovak communities.

Through these connections, I had the pleasure of meeting Alena, and together, we embarked on the exciting journey of building on from the previous Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences, which had been active in Sydney before the Velvet Revolution. Our aim is to foster collaboration and celebration of arts and sciences, bridging the gap between cultures and creating meaningful experiences for our community. I'm thrilled to be part of this endeavour and look forward to the vibrant exchange of ideas and creativity ahead.

    Indigenous Cultural Consultant

I am a proud Kamilaroi woman from Moree in North-western NSW. I have considerable experience as an Indigenous Consultant. I have worked extensively in indigenous community
services for the past 40 years, both in the government & NGO sectors, dealing with indigenous children, family units and the elderly.

For example, I developed the first Aboriginal Home Care Service in Moree, took part in creating the first Centrelink Remote Area Visiting Teams to remote communities, managed Aboriginal Home Care Services to 15 indigenous communities from Tweed Heads to Grafton in the Far North Coast, and been a specialist consultant to Housing NSW and the Department of Communities and Justice. I am also proud of having been the indigenous representative of the University of NSW at Gallipoli in 2004 to acknowledge and pay respect to fallen and unrepatriated indigenous soldiers in the Great War. In 2024 I was also chosen to present indigenous issues to King Charles III during his visit to Australia. I generally love publically speaking 'off the cuff' or from the heart about indigenous affairs, I am passionate about art and have a particular love of Czech history and culture.
